The Allure of ‘Studies Say’: Why People Trust Referenced Claims

There are several psychological reasons why people instinctively trust statements backed by references to studies—even when they don’t fully understand them.

1. The Authority Bias and the Illusion of Certainty

Humans have a tendency to accept information from perceived experts or authoritative sources without deep scrutiny. This is known as the authority bias (Milgram, 1974). The Problem With Blindly Accepting ‘Studies Say’ Arguments

While studies are critical for informed decision-making, blind acceptance of referenced claims poses several risks:

1. Cherry-Picking and Confirmation Bias

If someone says, “A study found that people behave this way,” it is essential to ask: Where was the study conducted? Who were the participants? Are the findings applicable beyond the sample group?

How to Challenge Claims and Think Beyond References

To engage more critically with research-based arguments, we must move beyond passive acceptance and adopt a more investigative mindset.

1. Ask Key Questions About the Study

Instead of accepting a claim at face value, ask:

  • Who conducted the study, and what are their potential biases?
  • What methodology was used—was it observational, experimental, or a meta-analysis?
  • How large was the sample size, and was it representative?
  • Was the study peer-reviewed and replicated?
  • Does this study align with the broader body of research, or is it an outlier?

2. Look at Meta-Analyses and Systematic Reviews

Instead of relying on single studies, consider meta-analyses—studies that aggregate multiple research findings to identify consistent patterns. A single study can be misleading, but a well-conducted meta-analysis provides a more comprehensive view of a topic.

3. Recognize the Role of Skepticism Without Cynicism

Being skeptical does not mean dismissing research altogether. Rather, it means maintaining a healthy balance between trust and scrutiny. Skepticism encourages deeper inquiry, while cynicism outright rejects evidence, even when it is strong.

4. Accept That Science Evolves

Science is not static. What is accepted as fact today may be challenged tomorrow.
